Why a programme in Belgium?

ECMS-Halles-Assembly-April
Since 2017, Africalia has been implementing a Global Citizenship and Solidarity Education programme based on culture and creativity (ECMS). The ECMS is a process that aims to enable Belgian citizens to develop a reflection on the Western model of society, to rethink the concept of citizenship and democracy through appropriate tools. We believe that culture has a major role to play in this process.

The programme focuses on raising awareness among Belgian cultural players of the issues emerging from the African continent and the African diasporas in Belgium.

The aim of these actions is to :

1. Raise awareness among cultural operators of contemporary African/Afro-descendant creativity that is civic-minded, critical and capable of generating change.
2. Make a direct link with its programmes in Africa and promote in Belgium the idea that culture builds bridges beyond borders and prejudices and that here, as everywhere else, creativity is fertile ground for imagination, liberation and emancipation.
3. Work on a duty of inclusion and on the notion of "equitable cooperation and cultural production" within the Belgian cultural sector by reexamining our artistic production practices.
