Slum TV is based in Mathare, a slum in the heart of Nairobi. For Grassroots upgraded, twenty members of the collective chose a LOMO camera to present their living environment. Grassroots upgraded is less a development project than an ironic take on the world of development: a position evoked by the title of the book and the politically incorrect name of the collective. The approach is conceptual and political, the choice of medium aesthetic. The LOMO camera is seen as an anarchic medium, with a 'chance factor' and an imperfect, blurred aesthetic. With these clichés, Slum TV goes beyond the stereotypes that have shaped our representations of Africa.
