This book bears witness to a human adventure, that of the photographer Julius Mwelua gifted and generous Kenyan who was born and survived in the Mathare Valley. This part of Nairobi is one of the huge slums that make the Kenyan capital a permanent social scandal. There, in the destitution of an overcrowded, poor and hopeless city, the photographer walked among the people, the metal sheets and the cans, but above all he trained and stimulated children and teenagers to look differently at the world around them. Trained by their mentor in the use of the lens, these young people in turn took a sympathetic but undeniably critical look at the state of their housing estate. In this delicate blend of tenderness and realism, Mwelu offers us 112 testimonies of his mission as an artist and teacher.
