Burkina Faso - Circus

The artist

A few words about your artistic career

Initially trained with the Canadian NGO jeunesse du monde, I then completed my circus arts training at Faso circus and Visit us then with the Awaln'arts festival in Morocco. Finally, I took part in the creation of a show with the Jules-Verne circus in Amiens. Since then I've been a circus arts instructor in several countries. Today I work with Burkina Circus.

How long have you been an artist?

I've been an artist since 2002.

Why did you apply for this scholarship? How will the scholarship support you?

With Burkina Circus, we applied to create a quality show by working in depth on the writing, script and direction. The grant will support our writing and residency.

What are your concrete artistic objectives after this residency?

To offer a quality show at national and international level by taking part in festivals and competitions and organising tours using the show as a support.

His residence

What did you achieve during this creative residency? What is the result (work created)? Who was involved in the creative process?

We did both writing research and set up a creative residency. Following the residency, we produced a professional circus show that tells a story to raise public awareness. The show involves 9 circus, theatre, storytelling, music and dance artists. We also involved Hugo Costedombre, technical director of the Institut Français de Ouagadougou, Claudine Dussolier, a member of Circostrada, Hippolyte Ouangrawa, director of Théâtre de l'espoir, and Moussa Ouattara, coordinator of Burkina Circus.

How do you think these activities help us to think about the world today, in relation to the COVID-19 crisis, and/or about building for the future?

The show takes as its starting point the end of covid-19 and shows how we might build the world of tomorrow. Of course, there is the health crisis, but we need to think about and reinvent our world of tomorrow. We've adapted it for all audiences and left the narrative to illustrate the imagination. What's more, as the circus is an art form that can bring together all the arts, and one that attracts audiences, we've seen an increase in the number of "likes", views and people reached.

How did you feel during the residency? And afterwards?

We have seen the potential that art has for raising awareness. Mixing arts such as circus, theatre, storytelling, dance and music is an effective way of raising awareness. We're pleased with the result, but we'll have to keep up the good work, because there's still room for improvement. We have seen the potential to put on renowned shows like the other arts, and we have the capacity to put on a show that will tour the world and be performed in major venues.
