19th edition of Ishango Encounter

From June 20 to 30, 2024, the city of Goma, located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), hosted the 19th edition of the Ishango meetings, a prestigious cultural event. Formerly known as the Salaam Kivu International Film Festival, this major event brought together filmmakers, intellectuals and artists from North Kivu's new artistic scene.

Despite a difficult security context, Yolé! Africa maintained the organization of these meetings. The varied program included film screenings, photo and video installations, and intellectual debates, with the aim of presenting an authentic image of Goma and rethinking the world from this city. Art and culture were used as awareness and advocacy tools to address ecological and security issues in North Kivu and Africa.

The theme of this 19th edition was “KUMILIKI, reimagining belonging and healing”, a crucial subject for a region facing armed violence and significant societal challenges.
