A few words about your artistic career

Growing up, the experiences I had with my family and friends, and the moments in my life became the foundations of great beauty and meaning. They have enriched my journey as an artist through self-expression and later, self-discovery.

How long have you been an artist?

I've been an artist since I was a child; for 18 years now.

Why did you apply for this scholarship? How will the scholarship support you?

I've always dreamed of being a fashion designer with a social impact. This grant will give me the opportunity to create concepts and bring to life the ideas I've dreamed of and connect with the global community. It gives me a helping hand to bring my dream to life.

What are your concrete artistic objectives after this residency?

- Expressing art through fashion for the consumption of others - Inspiring and encouraging others to look at beautiful things positively and creatively through fashion - Connecting people through fashion samantha_kabahuma_2.jpg
His residence

What did you achieve during this creative residency? What is the result (work created)?

The creative residency taught me how to express myself by being patient, resilient and pushing myself to greater heights. I created three garments that reflect the past, present and future of human behaviour as an effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The three garments are Flashback (past), Silence (present - containment and quarantine) and Renaissance (future). Three creative colleagues were involved in the creation process.

How do you think these activities help us to think about the world today, in relation to the COVID-19 crisis, and/or about building for the future?

As part of 'Renaissance', it is now more imperative than ever for the fashion industry to have sustainability initiatives, as it is one of the world's biggest polluters. Many garments end up in landfill sites, releasing dangerous toxins into the environment. The COVID-19 crisis should help to change the world's mindset so that it adopts environmentally-friendly habits such as recycling and upcycling, creating good quality clothes that can be worn in different styles, and so on. This will help to build a sustainable future so that we can coexist with nature.

How did you feel during the residency? And afterwards?

I enjoyed my residency because I spent my days researching and doing my work while staying at home. Now, at the end of the residency, I'm grateful to have taken part because it gave me the opportunity to express myself more creatively. I was able to create my work as I had imagined it. I encountered a few difficulties, which prompted me to do more research and ask other artists for advice. So I'm happy with the result.
