The international conference "Humanizing art, culture and media (Humanising art, culture and the media), organised by AFF and Africalia, focuses on raising awareness and sharing the experiences needed to create a society without discrimination, and to develop equality and identities that unite rather than divide. These are the fundamental values of any society where respect for others and human rights are central concerns.

The theme of this year's conference is representations of sub-Saharan African women in culture, art and the media (African and non-African). It looks at the image and role of women in the audiovisual world in Africa and outside the continent, including the diaspora. The aim is to give a voice to those promoting gender equality and the empowerment of African women, which means reinforcing the legitimacy of gender equality values by tackling known gender disparities and gaps in art, culture and the media.

AFF has set up an international panel made up of women from the African continent and the African diaspora in Europe: Kemiyondo Coutinho (Uganda), Liz Kilili (Kenya), Tsitsi Dangarembga (Zimbabwe), Hélène Christelle Mungayende (Netherlands) and Heleen Debeuckelaere (Belgium). The meeting will be moderated by Ashika L. Singh.

This conference takes place :

  • Friday 26 April at 2pm at the M - Museum in Leuven (Leopold Vanderkelenstraat 28, 3000 Leuven).
  • Saturday 27 April at 2pm at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Leuvensesteenweg 13, 3080 Tervuren).
