Afrika Filmfestival 2018

Conference "Humanizing Culture, Art & Media: How and why images, produced by Africans, find an (their) audience?"

Friday 20 April 2018 at 2pm at M - Museum, Vanderkelenstraat 28, 3000 Leuven.

The theme of this year's conference is: how and why do images made by Africans or about Africans - in a non-stereotypical way - reach (their) audiences? The channels that send Western images around the world, including to Africa, often seem to work in one direction only. Given that they dominate the media landscape, with their impact on culture, art and the media, this naturally leads us to the question of how and why images of Africans manage to find the - or an - audience. It's a question of cultural diversity or cultural enrichment, essential if, above all, we are to overcome our own limitations.

The international panel is made up of : Yasser Booley (Photographer - South Africa)George Karanja (Coordinator ofASMO - Alliance for Slum Media Organisations - Kenya)Tessa Boerman (International Film Festival Rotterdam - Netherlands), Tsitsi Dangarembga (International Images Film Festival for Women - Zimbabwe) and Luciana Ceccatto Farah (Curator and director - Brazil).

Yasser "Mierkat" Booley took up photography at the dawn of the "new" South Africa. He grew up under the political tensions of South Africa in a conservative Malay family in Bo-Kaap. He soon became an apprentice observer eager to capture the essence of the eclectic 'rainbow' nation. This book is a celebration and an indulgent vision. Booley's South Africa shows ordinary people, caught at a crossroads and entangled in a confused unity. Yasser emphasises the beauty of humanity across the diversity of cultures, classes, genders and religious differences. His character and style reveal an unbridled optimism, tinged with casual irony.

The exhibition is taken from South Africa at Liberty" photo book by Yasser Booley.

Masterclass by Yasser Booley & vernissage : 19 April, 8.00 pm

Exhibition: Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April, 2.00 pm > 7.00 pm
