Canon Griffin have founded the History in Progress Uganda. Under this name, they have been documenting historical collections of Ugandan photographs in their current state ever since.

Stultiens' role has evolved from that of documentalist to that of artist and curator. She favours a polyphonic approach, asking contemporary artists to activate the visual material. The result is a convergence of personal documentation and the work of Ugandan photographers, as well as historical snapshots taken by Western settlers and missionaries. She compiled the results in eight intimate publications under the title Ebifananyi and exhibited them in numerous small-scale exhibitions in Uganda and Northern Europe.

The presentation of the FOMU brings together for the first time all the photographic collections on which the publications are based. It shows the diversity of narrative possibilities of historical visual material. The exhibition also gives an idea of the reactions to the collections in Uganda. In this way, Stultiens highlights the use of the photographic image in this East African country and challenges the stereotypical image of Africa.

Practical info

Dates : 27.10.2017 - 18.02.2018
Location: FOMU - Fotomuseum province Anvers, Waalsekaai 47, 2000 Antwerpen
Opening hours : open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, closed on Mondays.
Price : € 10 full price / € 7 reduced price, group price (from 15 people) / € 3 -26 years / free for under-18s
For further information: fotomuseum.be or Facebook

    logo-FOMU

    logo-paradox

    logo-mondriaanfonds

    expo-ebifananyi-fomu2

The Antwerp Museum of Photography - FOMU->https://www.fotomuseum.be/fr.html] – presents an exhibition that highlights the dialogue between photographic archives relating to Ugandan history and the contemporary artistic response to this heritage. Ebifananyi invites us to question the documentation process and the use of images to write history.
