In southern Katanga, one of the richest regions in Africa and the economic heartland of the Congo, towns have grown up around copper and cobalt mines. The relationship between the mining industry and the population is almost filial. Sammy Baloji has been analysing this interaction for almost ten years, capturing the memories, hopes and imaginations of these children of the mines in these wasteland landscapes.

The historical perspective of the series Memory has the audacity to invite the oppressed of yesterday to dialogue with the ruins of today. Far from presenting a dead end, it invites us to rethink society, as if to exorcise it, to give peace to the dead so that they no longer haunt us. The optimism of this approach is clearest in KolweziIt's about a ghost town and working-class people reclaiming as much of their wealth and dreams of comfort as they can. And beyond that, their quest for dignity.
