His very first exhibition, in May 2006, won a prize from the Fondation Blachère d'Apt, which awards prizes to emerging artists in Dakar. His "Voleur d'ombres" (Thief of Shadows) was a successful choice, emerging in the light of unvarnished, unadorned photographs that the artist had hastily arranged in a dark, modest corridor. Saïdou Dicko, the painter of Sahelian aridity, had only been photographing for six months at the time, and yet! Bursting with freshness, unspeakable poetry, tenderness and magical radiance, his snapshots of fleeting moments instinctively captivated crowds of connoisseurs who were nonetheless gorged to the eyeballs with works of art of all kinds. A painter of heat-stricken plains where cows thirst for shade graze, Dicko turned to photography to capture, this time in bustling cities, other secret truths, revealed by the trace that their passage leaves, for a moment, in the air of time. Truths that resemble us and bring us together.

All the photos in this book - almost seventy out of a selection of over five thousand - were taken by Saïdou Dicko between December 2005 and December 2006, in Dakar, Ouagadougou and his village near Déou, as part of his participation in Dak'art, his first exhibition.

Saïdou Dicko was undoubtedly a revelation, as other artists have been throughout the history of Dak'Art. The painter of Sahelian aridity had only been photographing for six months, and yet! His work immediately caught the attention of many visitors for its originality, for its poetry, for its striking rhythm and sensitivity. It's an amusing way of lifting the veil on mysteries as they emerge from the shadows. Saïdou Dicko, equipped with his electronic sensor, takes it in turns to steal shadows and cut shadows on roads and street corners. He uses the subterfuge of a Game Boy game and off he goes! He surprises his subjects as they move.

Shadow of the passer-by surprised in his long walk ahead. Shadow of the mother attentive to her offspring. Shadow of the cyclist on the cusp of the race. The shadow of the shadow and the shadow of the thief himself... Dicko and his long-term patience give an original colour to this crowd of shadows that pass through our lives and that we no longer see.
