SLOW #03

SLOW #03: KIN BRU

KIN BRU

The world is changing fast! Especially in cities, where new people and new art forms are pouring in. The KVS wants to bring the extraordinarily interesting artistic undercurrent of the street to the stage. That's why SLOW (Slam our World) combines urban spoken word with theatre. For each session of SLOW, the KVS invites an international guest. After a residency of a few weeks in Brussels, he or she shares the KVS stage with local artists, in a heroic and fragile attempt to capture and translate into verse the multicoloured and plural soul of the city.

For this third session of SLOW, KVS is inviting a slam poet from Kinshasa: Do Nsoseme Dora. In the Congolese capital, slam is very much in vogue as a poetic and eloquent expression that is also powerful and urgent, enabling committed artists to share their vision of society, daily life and politics with the public. Through competitions and concerts, slam is experienced as both a contemporary and ancestral mode of communication, reminiscent of the griots who played the essential role of passing on oral culture.

Last summer, KVS accompanied Pitcho Womba Konga and Roland Dumbi-Kabangu - two Brussels artists from the Congolese diaspora - to Kinshasa. There they worked with six slammers and six film-makers. The result? New interdisciplinary cross-pollinations and a series of video poems in which words and images are passionately and excitingly intertwined.

On 24 and 25 November, we are presenting the Kinshasa films at the KVS, and one of the duos - slam poet Do Nsoseme Dora and director/scenographer Fabrice Kalonji - will be coming to Belgium for this special edition of Slam our World. Knowing the intrepid climate of Kinshasa, where Brussels is jokingly called Lola ('paradise' in Lingala), this SLOW will offer an exclusive perspective on the two capitals.
