Jumping into Life is a feature-length documentary about young people trained at the Kuruka Maisha School of Performing Arts. Produced and filmed by young people from the same social background, the film offers an intimate and intense look at the lives of young people in the slums of Nairobi. It shows the joy and pleasure they take in discovering that they are performing artists, but also suggests the complexity and sometimes disillusionment they can feel when faced with the fantasies and dreams that being an artist arouses in them.

Presentation of the partners

Kuruka Maisha is an arts school for street children. It was developed on the premise that artistic activities help street children in many ways. The school offers classes in visual and performing arts such as acrobatics, traditional and contemporary African dance, capoeira, theatre, visual arts and music. Each class has very specific objectives, priorities and a well-defined teaching approach. The artistic activities help the social workers to establish contact with the street children. What's more, these activities have a major impact on the children's physical and mental state.

The Mwelu Foundation is dedicated to projects for children and teenagers in the slums of Nairobi's Mathare Valley. It introduces and trains young people in photography and video, while ensuring that they attend school regularly. Their mission is to nurture the talent of children from Nairobi's poorest communities by training them in the creative arts and key life skills. By giving children a voice and promoting education, they hope to break the cycle of poverty and violence. Find out more about the Mwelu Foundation.
