In 2003, two men meet. One is Cameroonian, born in 1971, the other is Belgian, born in 1963. Today, they are friends, but to get there, it took everyone “symbolically” to cross the River.

This path is the subject of the show: a question mark on our memory, that of our own and that which is common in history that marked our country, our community membership. It is the story of our tears during the fall of the Berlin Wall: tears of joy for Guy to the men and women standing on the wall,… It is the story of big and small stories that we went through: the encounter of a woman in the streets of Dakar, one last beer at an airport, a visit to the Louvre museum, a trip by taxi clando, … But also, Independence Tchatcha, Rostropovich, Césaire, Mitterrand, Sankara, Christiane Taubira’s speech, Lumumba, …

No characters, but the story of two men trying to find, armed with their differences, a truth that brings them together.

Organisatie : EU cultuurcontactpunt + UE Point Contact Culture

Africalia in Zuid-Afrika

Paul Brikhill, Creator Director of Pamberi Trust. Interview made by Bjorn Maes “programme coordinator Southern Africa” for Africalia.
Pamberi Trust is founded on the belief that the arts are critical in shaping values that reflect society. Cognisant of the economic potential of the arts and the need to create free and diverse means of cultural expression, Pamberi Trust exists as an enabling facility, by which all performing artists and producers of culture may develop, promote and perform their works, and participate in building the nation.

December 22, 2011, 20h30 at Bronks, Varkensmarkt/rue du Marché aus Porcs 15-17, 1000 Brussels

Free entrance – reservations at info@corban.be

Corban presents the results of its first TRANCEMEDIAMIX (TMMX) held this summer and autum.

TMMX connects different arts and cultures. Two artistst with a different artistic and cultural

background work together during one month, resulting in a showcase that can take any artistic form.TMMX is a platform where interdisciplinarity and intercultural cooperation is essential.

TMMX1 / The machine is always precise

Panaibra Gabriel Canda (dancer and choreographer from Maputo, Mozambique) and Michela

Henle (Swiss circus artist who lives and works in Brussels)

In TMMX1 both artists have worked out a solo movement for Michela, using an interactive system: a laser scanner detects objects and movements. The dancer controls image and sound through her position in space. The installation also influences the movements of the dancer. Who manipulates whom?

TMMX1 / The Machine… was shown in the PARTS Summer studios on July 29. This cooperation will be shown by way of video fragments.

TMMX2 / Bare-Faced

Lazara Rosell Albear (Cuban-Belgian artist with a background in dance, music and visual arts) and Sammy Baloji (photographer and video artist from Lumumbashi, DR Congo, who currently lives and works in Brussels)

For these artists TMMX2 was the trigger to look for a shared history. They followed routes from

Central-African Congo culture to Cuba, via traditional religious practices based on trance.

The spectator is taken on a journey in an audio-visual installation. A trip between documentary and free-jazz.

TMMX2 / Bare-Faced was created at De Vaartkapoen on August 20 and is shown here in a

condensed version with the cooperation of Sam Rushton (portable electronics) & Kitsbeagle

December (trumpet & horn).

TMMX3 / Article 0.0

Liz Kinoshita (Canadian dancer, lives and works in Brussels) and Ornella Mamba (actress from

Kinshasa, DR Congo, currently lives and works in Paris)

For TMMX3 both artists searched intensely for what they share and for what divides them. The

starting theme was religion and religious practice. They show a transversal cut of their encounter, the process they went through, their opposed ideas and shared memories. The public is invited to assist in writing the new credo.

TMMX3 / Article 0.0 is shown integrally, as it was during the end of the work process, early

November in the studio of the Needcompany.

The performances take about 2 hours, with an intermission between TMMX 2 and 3.

Corban and TMMX are supported by de Vlaamse Overheid and the Vlaamse

Gemeenschapscommissie. Thanks to: Cimatics, PARTS Summer studios, Kaaitheater,

Paul Panda Farnana
Raised by an unmarried female Belgian artist, Panda Farnana was the first Congolese to have been awarded a diploma in higher education in Belgium in 1909. Appointed as an agronomist, he returned to the Congo as the first Belgian civil servant with black skin. He underwent there the apartheid and little by little had to renounce his various posts due to harassment.
Back to Belgium, he was to devote all his energy to demanding equality between whites and blacks through education, under the virulent attacks of the colonial press. He closely collaborated with the Afro-American W.E.B. DuBois in the organisation of the Pan-African Congress of Brussels in 1921. His belonging to two worlds – as a nationalist Congolese and Belgian patriot – casts a different light on Belgian-Congolese history.
