In 1968, the South African visual artist Dumile Feni goes into exile in the United States, leaving behind his pregnant wife. Just days before his return home, Feni died suddenly and tragically. Through the eyes of his daughter, Marriam Diale, this documentary seeks to paint a portrait of a man lost to his country by inviting those who knew him to retrace his journey across three continents. Through their accounts, we realise that the essence of Feni will forever remain as elusive, multiple and complex as his work. "Zwelidumile" describes the impact of exile on families and restores Feni to his rightful place in South African art.
